Enter the direct URL to an .h5 / .hdf5 file, or to an Ecolego assessment (.eas).

HDF5 Browser for VS Code
This browser as an extension for Visual Studio Code: .h5, .hdf5 and .he5 files open in it as an editor, with everything this page does, and a file of any size is read a piece at a time.
Looking for the latest version…
Download the extension with the button below.
In VS Code, open the Extensions view (⇧⌘X, or Ctrl+Shift+X), choose Install from VSIX… in its … menu and pick the file. Or, in a terminal: code --install-extension hdf5-browser.vsix
Reload the window when VS Code asks. From then on the extension keeps itself up to date: it installs each new version from this site by itself, and HDF5 Browser: Check for Updates looks at once.
💡 Tip: Hold Ctrl (⌘ on Mac) and click datasets to compare multiple, or groups that draw a chart to draw them together
HDF5 Browser
An interactive browser for exploring and visualising HDF5 data files.
Getting Started
Load files — open an .h5 / .hdf5 file from the Explorer, or click Add Files. To compare files, select them in the Explorer and choose Open Together in HDF5 Browser.
Browse — expand groups in the tree on the left to explore the file structure.
Select — click a dataset to view its attributes and chart.
Tips
Ctrl-click (⌘ on Mac) datasets to compare multiple in one chart.
Ctrl-click groups that draw a chart of their own to draw them together, a panel each, or in one chart with Same chart.
Use the search bar to filter the tree — supports * wildcards and / full-path search.
Load multiple files and use the ∩ (intersect) or ∪ (union) toggle to combine trees.
An Ecolego assessment (.eas) opens too: each run it keeps opens as a file of its own.
Large files open at once: from 256 MB a file is read from disk as you look at it, not loaded whole.
Toggle Dynamic Legend to auto-hide traces outside the current view.
Right-click the chart to copy or download data as CSV / Excel.
Right-click in the tree to save the selection as an HDF5 file; values are drawn from its distributions, 1,000 or as many as you choose.
Python, by the chart's controls, writes the chart as a matplotlib script that draws it from the HDF5 files.
Chart Controls
Scale selectors — switch axes between linear and log scales, and give an axis's unit a prefix: k shows Bq as kBq, the values divided by 1000.
Show Total — for radionuclide groups, overlay a summed trace.
Show Ratio — when two files are loaded, display max-value ratios per isotope.
Show Max — append maximum trace value to each legend entry (disabled when Show Ratio is active).
Preset views — choose one in the list by the chart. The gear beside it opens the axis presets window: the chart's axes, to set by hand, and the saved presets, to use, edit, update or delete. Drag it aside by its title bar while you work on the chart.
